'Esprit' concept architectural art piece for Bond projects in Canberra, Australia, 2021

'Esprit' was commissioned by Bond Projects for their 'Tempus' development in Turner, 2020. Bond Group are a property group that push the boundaries of architecture in Canberra, and I had the pleasure of working with the Founder/Director on this exciting venture during the height of the pandemic. Here in this project the brief was to disguise a hidden room in the main living space. The only way to enter was through the artwork. These were exciting times.

The 'Tempus' development is sleek and modern with simplicity at its heart, grounded by subtle black accents, steel, concrete and glass as the driving force behind the spaces, including the copper rooves which would age and blend in with the natural environment over time. The artwork was to blend in with these elements whilst also adding its own character to the space, adding vitality through its organic motifs and freedom of form.

'Esprit' was created through my exploration of the fluid dynamic art form, I felt that the piece benefited by the addition of bold, black calligraphic elements that contrast with the diffuse, more atmospheric background. The ultimate message of this piece was finding balance through the piece's dynamic contrasts.

Below are some process shots of the piece being created in my home studio

A series of challenges were introduced by the architecture where the painting was to be installed. The piece was going to be affixed to the pivot door of the hidden room, so the artwork needs to be split at the top of the door. This would require the measurements of the artwork being very precise with minimal errors at all joins. An added complexity was the effects at the split where the paints naturally are drawn to. The challenge was to create a seamless transition of the motif across this divide.

Esprit marks a pivotal moment where my art is utilised in this way so directly within the architecture of buildings and crafts experiences by letting the artworks guide you into new physical spaces. This is an exciting time and something that opens the door (pun intended) to these new experiences of the future, melding organic art and rectilinear architecture in a beautiful union.
